From krushing on Kourtney Kardashian, meeting Gina Liano and really flying on a magic carpet – say what?! – NW chats to Aladdin the Musical star Ainsley Melham about life as a Disney prince.

Hi Ainsley! Thanks so much for chatting to us. So tell us, what’s it like playing Aladdin?

It’s really like a dream come true moment. I’ve always hoped to be on stage in a big beautiful show like this and now I get to do it, and I get to play Aladdin, a Disney prince which is just insane.

It’s like every child’s dream come true.

You must have been a fan of Disney growing up. What were your favourite movies?

Yes, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin are two that I remember watching.

Beauty and the Beast, because I think I really enjoyed the furniture coming to life. It’s a really fun concept for a kid to wrap his head around.

Disney Theatrical Productions under the direction of Thomas Schumacher presents Aladdin, music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, book and additional lyrics by Chad Beguelin at Capitol Theatre Sydney, starring: Ainsley Melham (Aladdin), Michael James Scott (Genie), Arielle Jacobs (Jasmine), Troy Sussman (Babkak), Adam Jon Fiorentino (Kassim), Robert Tripolino (Omar), Adam Murphy (Jafar), Aljin Abella (Iago) and George Henare (Sultan) directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw

What has been the biggest challenge playing Aladdin?

Living up to what everybody knows him to be. Everybody knows the cartoon, everybody knows the story, and everybody has the things they like about Aladdin and about the movie.

So to recreate that on stage there is a little bit of pressure there, but I guess it’s the challenge – and the exciting thing about a challenge is rising to the occasion an embodying Aladdin on stage.

So spill – are you really flying on that magic carpet?

That is just something else really; it’s out of its world… It really feels like you are floating true the air.  [But] That has got to be a secret unfortunately otherwise it wouldn’t be Disney magic!

If there was another Disney character you could bring to life on the stage or the screen, who would it be?

Gaston from Beauty and the Beast! He is totally different to Aladdin. Aladdin is like this charming, loveable, street rat whereas Gaston is this big burly, a little bit arrogant and a little bit annoying human.

It would be fun to get inside his head and actually find out a bit about Gaston and bring him to life.

Now, because you’re chatting with NW, we have to know, who’s your favourite Kardashian sister?

Kourtney because she has cool clothes and she has a clothing line – I enjoy the fact that she gets out and creates in the fashion industry.

And which is your favourite Real Housewives city?

I don’t watch it, but I have met [Real Housewives of Melbourne star] Gina Liano. She’s quite a character and I enjoyed meeting her so that will have to be my favourite.

Tell us, what shows are you binge watching right now? Any good picks for us?

How to Get Away with Murder! I’m about to start Stranger Things, and Charmed is an old favourite that I always watch over and over again.

And if you could join the cast of one TV show, what would it be, why, and who would you play?

I would join Will & Grace because it’s absolutely hysterical, It’s something I watched growing up. I would be Jack (played by Sean Hayes) because he just looks like he has so much fun on screen.
