With ripped abs and glowing skin that even her much-younger Jenny From The Block self would envy, we’re beginning to think Jennifer Lopez is ageing backwards!

But it turns out her secret isn’t quite so magical – J.Lo simply eats healthily, trains hard and avoids hangovers and a beer belly by staying away from the demon drink.

“I don’t drink or smoke or have caffeine,’ the singer, 46, confesses. “That really wrecks your skin as you get older.”

Why is booze the devil?

Alcohol is the Achilles heel of even the best diets, because when you drink, your body focuses on processing the alcohol, so food – including that carb-heavy pre-game meal – is stored as fat.

“Alcohol is calorie-rich and used by the body as pure sugar,” explains Brisbane nutrition expert Dr Cris Beer.

“Any time alcohol is in your system, your body will use this for energy production and store calories from the food you’re eating as body fat. Reducing alcohol helps balance blood sugar, which helps to reduce weight around your midsection.”

Alcohol can also accelerate the effects of ageing by dehydrating skin and causing those nasty red blood vessels to appear on your face.

On top of that, studies are increasingly pointing to a strong link between drinking alcohol – even lightly – and breast cancer.

How to cut down

Going out with the girls grog-free may sound like a nightmare, but there are ways to make it easier.

“Often alcohol consumption is just a habit that is formed by repetition,” says Dr Cris. “Try drinking a glass of sparkling water in your wine or champagne glass each evening instead.”

She also suggests making yourself accountable by buddying up, or signing up to Dry July (dryjuly.com) and doing a month booze-free to raise money for people affected by cancer.

Then, to break drinking habits, you can reduce social outings, at least initially, by taking up a new hobby or sport to help keep your mind off the bar!

How does J.Lo do it?

She just remembers how awesome it is to wake up feeling refreshed rather than dusty – as alcohol wrecks sleep!

“Seven or eight [hours’ sleep] is mandatory. If I don’t get it I just don’t feel right,” she says. “I start feeling crazy, I get emotional and I feel tired all the time.”
