The Bachelor 2014 couple Blake Garvey and Louise Pillidge‘s relationship was difficult from the very beginning – after all, Blake initially proposed to his first choice Sam Frost at the finale, but then dumped her for second runner-up Louise. Yup, we all remember!

And now, it appears the public outcry over their controversial relationship wore them down – with Blake and Louise announcing that they’ve split, after 18 months together. They’ve spent the past three months in relationship counselling, but both admit they haven’t been happy for a while – although we’d be easily fooled by their loved-up social media photos.

“We’ve both tried so hard to make it work, but the negativity that has surrounded us has changed us as individuals,” Blake tells New Idea magazine.

“Sometimes, when you try so hard to make it work, you become nervous about being yourself. We felt like we were walking on eggshells around each other, always trying to say the right thing. It was suffocating.”

Louise admits that she knew the relationship wasn’t working, but wasn’t strong enough to say anything.

“We sat down recently and Blake said: It’s just not working – I feel like we’re treading water. It feels surreal, and since then I’ve gone through so many emotions. I’ve been crying, numb and angry.”
