Let’s all take a moment to say thanks to Aussie director Baz Luhrmann.

After all, he’s the one who catapulted a young Leonardo DiCaprio to heart-throb status in the 1996 flick Romeo + Juliet– Baz’s modern adaptation of the Shakespeare classic. “There was no-one else but Leonardo for Romeo,” Baz says of casting the film, which last week celebrated two decades in our film collection.

The film that hit screens was nothing short of revolutionary. “Some people have criticised the movie, [saying], ‘You can’t do that to Shakespeare!” admits Leo.

“But Shakespeare was a genius. I’m sure if he was alive, he would have been totally behind what Baz was trying to do.”
