Miley Cyrus has been a gay rights advocate for years, and although she’s currently dating Aussie hottie Liam Hemsworth, she’s revealed that her first romantic relationship was actually with a girl.

Miley opened up about her struggles with gender identity and sexuality to Variety, as one of the women featured in their Power Of Women issues, which also includes Helen Mirren, Scarlett Johansson, Laverne Cox and Ava DuVernay.

“My whole life, I didn’t understand my own gender and my own sexuality,” she revealed to the publication.

She confessed that it was about the time she was cast as Hannah Montana aged 11 that she started to explore her sexuality.

“My eyes started opening in the fifth or sixth grade. My first relationship in my life was with a chick.”

“I always hated the word ‘bisexual,’ because that’s even putting me in a box. I don’t ever think about someone being a boy or someone being a girl.”

After visiting a LGBTQ centre in Los Angeles, she found she was finally able to put a ‘label’ on herself.

“I saw one human in particular who didn’t identify as male or female,” she said.

“Looking at them, they were both: beautiful and sexy and tough but vulnerable and feminine but masculine. And I related to that person more than I related to anyone in my life.”

Miley also revealed that her struggles with gender identity and sexuality stemmed from being raised in a religious family, and that it was only recently that her mum actually understood her.

“On The Voice, this young girl started crying when she left, because I’m the reason she came out,” she continued.

“My mom started crying. She was like, ‘I’m so sorry about the way I was when you were that age and coming out.’ She never understood me until she saw that girl who couldn’t be herself. It was very cool.”
