After years of studying Survivor, Matt thought he knew what he was getting himself in to, but he was met with a surprise when he landed in Samoa. Apparently all the backstabbing, eruptions and people plays made him feel like he was in high school all over again – and he did not like high school.

So you can basically put your elimination down to Kristie’s poor decision making…

Kristie was a better option to work with than Lee and El, but she went in another direction you can’t control what everyone does out there…

Why did she side with Lee and El?! Obviously they needed to be separated!

[Laughs] I don’t know. It was such a clear thing that had to happen and it was the smartest thing to happen and we had the numbers for a couple of weeks! We always knew Lee and El were the strongest duo and they were going to take each other to the end, and Kristie knew that the entire time – she said it to me and Flick a million times, but she just didn’t wanna do it.

Lee and El really controlled the game in the final weeks, right? Everyone was going bonkers!

It was a bit of mayhem at the last week. I kept having this energy to try and make moves, but when it wasn’t happening it was so draining and so exhausting. Our heads were in such a fragile place it all kind of erupted. Lee went off a couple of times with a few different people, and Kristie obviously couldn’t make a clear move. We were all struggling.

So did you know you were on your way out?

The night I was going I knew it was happening because I was told I was going.

God, they really dictate the game, don’t they?

I never accepted my fate [that I was going], I was always trying to make a move and trying to make a change. I focused my energy on trying to turn Kristie and make her realise what she had to do. She was being controlled by other people. She was basically told she wasn’t allowed to talk to me. [Laughs] it was pretty difficult to get to get some one on one time with her to clear her head.

Wait? She wasn’t allowed to talk to you?

[Laughs] Yeah! You can really control what someone does. If you want to follow them like a hawk, you can do it. We tried to have chats and it wasn’t happening. It was full on. But World War Three erupted again. It’s frustrating… It was high school all over again – and I didn’t have a lot of friends in high school. I wasn’t allowed to talk to the cool kids.
